Our Story:
A Handshake That Shaped a City
“From a $19,900 rambler to Lake Minnetonka mansions, one family’s legacy builds on trust—and lasts through time.”
Our Founding Vision
In 1962, Doug Hansen and Tom Klingelhutz founded Hansen & Klingelhutz Construction with a handshake rooted in integrity. Doug, starting as a truck driver and apprentice at Ecklund & Swedlund Homes in Minneapolis, paused his career for U.S. Army service in Korea before returning to partner with Klingelhutz. Together, they bought 100 acres from farmer Pat Kerber and built their first rambler in Highland Park for $19,900—a three-bedroom home with a double garage and fireplace—turning farmland into Chanhassen’s heart.
Building Chanhassen’s Heart
Their work shaped neighborhoods like Western Hills, with over 200 homes still standing today. They gave back by donating land for City Center Park, Hansen Ball Park, and Kerber Pond, leaving a lasting legacy. In 1966, they built Chanhassen’s first apartment building at 410 Chan View, followed by the Chanhassen Bank and a warehouse at 7920 Kerber Boulevard, where Doug poured the bank’s vault walls by hand, showcasing his dedication.
“A handshake and a heart for community can build something truly enduring.”
A Family Legacy Thrives
In 1986, Doug’s sons, Steve and Gary, joined the business, learning the trade through old-fashioned apprenticeships rather than college. They incorporated as Hansen Hometech, Inc., with Doug overseeing production while the sons focused on design and remodeling. From restoring the Andrew Peterson North Barn to crafting luxury homes along Lake Minnetonka, they’ve earned numerous awards for their craftsmanship. Today, Gary’s son Charlie carries the vision forward, keeping it a family endeavor.
Crafting Your Dream Home
For over 60 years, Hansen Hometech has upheld integrity and lasting craftsmanship, shaping Chanhassen one home at a time. Doug, now retired to Green Lake/Spicer since 1995, stays involved between fishing trips, cherishing time with Steve, Gary, and his great-grandchildren. Let us bring your vision to life with a kitchen remodel, bathroom renovation, or home addition.
“We transform homes with care, inviting new families into our story.”
